Some will make you squirm in that good way: “Under the Red Star of Mars” is about a woman who gets away from her abusive boyfriend - enlisting her new man to do so - but you’re left wondering who the good guy in all of this is supposed to be. This collection packs a punch and a half with sharply written, voice-driven stories about being members of the Cherokee and Muscogee (Creek) nations in Oklahoma, which the author has in common with his characters. Cheyenne Madonna by Eddie Chuculate (Black Sparrow Press out now) There are some great stories in the collection by Métis author Jensen, but my personal favorite is the title story. This set of stories is one of the few - by a Native author or by any author - that seems to be able to pull off that cool-kid experimental thing and make it seem sharp and compelling. From the Hilltop by Toni Jensen (University of Nebraska Press out now)
